‘We were way better’ – Lyon’s Rayan Cherki slams ‘scared’ Manchester United’s gameplan

Rayan Cherki has ripped into Manchester United’s defensive mindset during Olympique Lyonnais’ 2-2 draw against the Premier League side in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

Cherki got a last-gasp equaliser at the Groupama Stadium, meaning that Lyon head to Old Trafford next week with the scores all square. OL had dominated for large periods and, speaking in the mixed zone post-match, the France youth international accused the Red Devils of coming into the game with a defensive mindset.

“We were way better than this [Manchester United] team,” began Cherki, a not-so-subtle reference to André Onana’s comments pre-match, which ignited a war of words between the Manchester United shot-stopper and a former midfielder for the Premier League side, Nemanja Matić. The former, who called Onana the worst goalkeeper in Manchester United’s history, started the game on the bench on Thursday night.

‘I hope they won’t do the same in the return leg’ – Cherki

“They are a good team but we were never scared of them and we never will be scared of them. We will go there (to Old Trafford) to win, to attack, not to defend as they did here,” added Cherki.

The Lyon academy product also spoke to Canal Plus and continued his criticism of Manchester United’s gameplan. “They came with two defensive midfielders so they were particularly scared of us. I hope that they won’t do the same in the return leg because we will go there to play beautiful football and to win,” he said.
