The Lazio ultras have promised to create a deafening atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico when receiving AC Milan in the Coppa Italia Round of 16.
The two sides met five days earlier in Serie A showdown at San Siro, which was decided by Rafael Leao’s solitary strike. Although it wasn’t their best performance, the Biancocelesti are still infuriated by the refereeing, as Giuseppe Collu refused to heed the VAR’s advice and award Lazio a spot-kick for a handball on Strahinja Pavlovic, instead making up a non-existent foul on Adam Marusic.
Collu’s decision was preceded by a spat with Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri, who lashed out at the match official before receiving his marching orders. Many felt that the former Juventus manager had done it on purpose to pile pressure on the referee. This is why Maurizio Sarri suggested that the VAR monitor should be moved to the opposite side of the dugouts.
While Sarri only aimed a subtle dig at his fellow Tuscan manager, the Curva Nord supporters were more explicit in their accusations. Ahead of Thursday’s clash at the Stadio Olimpico, the Lazio ultras released a statement (via Il Messaggero), vowing to create a hellish atmosphere, as they aim to ‘influence’ the match, as Allegri did at San Siro.
After everything that’s happened, you already know what to do. If you want to reach the quarterfinals, you’ll go there with your eardrums destroyed. The Lazio fans will take care of Lazio. Welcome to hell. We have to influence the outcome of the match like Allegri influenced the referee.
While Milan currently sit at the top of the Serie A table, Lazio trail behind the European spots in eighth place. Hence, the Coppa Italia might represent their most viable track towards European football next season.
