Werder Bremen are considering a move for Burnley centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal to strengthen their defence for the second half of the season, according to Fabrizio Romano, who says negotiations are under way.

Ekdal has started 13 Premier League games this term after spending the second half of last season on loan at FC Groningen.

He is the younger brother of Albin Ekdal, who spent three seasons with HSV before leaving following the club’s first-ever relegation from the Bundesliga.

The Swedish international joined Burnley from Djurgårdens IF three years ago.

Bremen are winless in their last nine Bundesliga matches, although Horst Steffen will remain in charge for the visit of Borussia Mönchengladbach.
