As Arsenal prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, manager Mikel Arteta has delivered key squad updates in his pre-match press conference.
Arsenal welcome Madrid to the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash on Tuesday.
The Gunners are chasing a place in the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 2008/09.
They face a tough challenge against the 15-time European champions. However, Bukayo Saka’s return to action has boosted Arsenal.
They will be without key centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, who has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Arteta could turn to Jakub Kiwior, who impressed in the 1-1 draw with Everton and earned the Man of the Match award. Alternatively, he may opt for Ben White in the centre of defence.
Speaking ahead of the match, Arteta provided a positive update on the fitness of the squad that played against Everton.
“We have another training session this afternoon, but Ben finished the game,” Arteta said.
“We had to stop him over time because he hasn’t played much football, but he was fine after the game.
“And with the rest, they went through the game, and they were able to do some bits yesterday and ready to train today.“
Artea confirmed that he has already decided who will replace Gabriel and hinted that Saka could start against Madrid.
“He’s in a much better place,” Arteta added. “Gradually, we have built his minutes in the last six or seven days.
“He scored with that really well, and he’s in a good place to be able to be used.“
Arteta also stressed the need to take a lead into the second leg in Spain.
“Very important, but it will be just the first leg, as you mentioned. The intention of the team is very clear. We want to achieve tomorrow, and we’re going to go for it.”
