Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has finally revealed the details leading to the sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City.

The England international made headlines when he made the switch to the Etihad following the Three Lions’ third-place finish in the 2026 World Cup.

Anderson has signed a five-year deal with the Sky Blues, and Enzo Maresca’s side has reportedly paid £116m for his services. Likewise, the 23-year-old has become the Cityzens’ new record signing, beating Jack Grealish, who was signed for £100m in 2021.

Anderson signed for Nottingham in 2024 following a long stint with Newcastle United. Despite spending only two seasons in the East Midlands, the subsequent sale earned his ex-employers unforeseen profits.

Nevertheless, he was an important figure at the City Ground, but Glasner has now admitted that Anderson’s departure had been determined when he took over in Nottingham.

Glasner admits Anderson exit was already settled

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Reds coach was asked whether there were any plans to convince their 23-year-old midfielder to stay.

“No, no, it was decided that he will leave, and I think that’s what we have to accept, and we are not at the end of the food chain in football,” the Austrian said.

Glasner admitted that the City Ground wasn’t a final destination for the most talented footballers and that the best will eventually leave.

However, the Reds coach also made it clear that Nottingham weren’t in any sort of financial crunch and that the decision had been made for non-financial reasons. Nevertheless, the money will still help Glasner as it can be reinvested across several areas of the squad.

Anderson could inherit Bernardo Silva’s midfield role

Anderson is more likely to replace Bernardo Silva’s role at the Etihad following the latter’s departure at the end of last season.

While the 23-year-old hasn’t joined pre-season yet, the World Cup players are expected to return a few days before the Community Shield.

That’s when we’ll see how Maresca uses Anderson under his system. Nevertheless, the friendly against Inter Milan did feature a two-man pivot.

Likewise, a role beside Rodri is expected for the England international if the Spaniard ends up staying at the Etihad for another season.
