West Bromwich Albion raised £14 million from the sales of Darnell Furlong and Tom Fellows late on in the window, but it perhaps should have been more.

West Bromwich Albion finished the summer transfer window with a couple of intriguing incoming pieces of business on deadline day, with Ryan Mason’s Baggies seeking to continue their strong start to the 2025-26 Championship season.
Albion eventually brought in Charlie Taylor and Samuel Iling-Junior on loan from Southampton and Aston Villa, respectively, although no new permanent additions were made after selling two key players late on in the window.
The Baggies head into the September international break sitting tucked inside the top two and the automatic promotion spots in the Championship, with 1- points collected from their opening four matches.
However, their late window business did see the departures of two key players, with Tom Fellows joining Southampton for a fee of £10 million, whilst experienced defender Darnell Furlong moved on to Ipswich Town for £3.5 million rising to £4 million.
After Southampton sold Tyler Dibling to Everton for a fee of £42 million, Saints opted to pursue a move for Tom Fellows, who had been a part of the England squad that defended their UEFA U21 European Championship crown earlier this summer.
They eventually got their man in the final week of the window, and with Furlong going to Portman Road, West Brom netted £14 million for the pair; but that is business that FLW's Albion fan pundit Callum Burgess believes could have been even better.
Callum told FLW: “I think that the £4 million fee for Furlong was definitely a good deal for us, but we’ll be looking at that £10 million for Fellows and thinking we could have really got a bit more for him.
“I think that when you’re looking at an England under-21 international, as well as some of the other transfer fees that have been raised on similar players, with the ability that he’s got, such as Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene, where you’ve got at least £15 million each for the two of them, I think you can look at that and think Albion have gone a bit short with the fee from Southampton.
“Overall, I think that £14 million is just a little bit short for the two of them. You’d probably be looking for close to perhaps around £20 million, when you’ve got £15 million for Fellows.
“Definitely £4 million for Furlong is a good deal. He’s 29 years old now and things have started to get a bit stale now so it is two different stories really.”
As Callum outlines, the sale of Furlong doesn’t seem to be too damaging for Albion, albeit the former Queens Park Rangers defender is a very solid operator and has been a good servant to the club.
However, the sale of Fellows would appear to be a little under par for what many would have expected, especially when considering his pedigree in comparison to Dibling.
In the Premier League last season, Dibling showed a range of qualities, particularly technically and with dribbling qualities, that he has a very high ceiling, but there was also a lack of general efficiency and effectiveness in the final third – forgivable for such a young player in a poor side at a high level.
However, Fellows is someone who, with the joint most assists in the Championship last season, has put up genuine numbers and has real pedigree and experience already at a very solid level.
