West Brom said in a statement they were devastated after former midfielder Quevin Castro died aged 25, having collapsed during a friendly in Portugal on Saturday morning.
The Portuguese-English midfielder was playing for Real Sport Clube, known locally as Real Massama, against Estrela da Amadora when he became unconscious in the opening minutes. Medical teams from both sides used a defibrillator and emergency services then continued resuscitation efforts before he was pronounced dead.
Born in Portugal, Castro moved to England in 2017 at the age of 16, and joined Albion as a teenager in 2021.
He made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal, and scored in a Premier League Cup final win over Wolves before loans at Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead. He left The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.
After leaving, he had spells with York City, King’s Lynn Town, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City and Eastbourne Borough before returning to Portugal to join Real Sport Clube.
Albion plan a period of applause in the 25th minute of tomorrow’s Championship match against Burnley, and James Morrison’s side will wear black armbands.
