West Brom have been docked two points with immediate effect for a profit and sustainability breach, dragging James Morrison’s side back towards the Championship drop fight.
The club said in a statement that a two-day hearing concluded on 23 April, with the EFL’s Club Financial Review Panel ruling they had exceeded the three-year upper loss threshold, so the sanction applies now.
Written reasons have not yet been issued. The precise overspend has not been disclosed, other than being less than £2 million. Albion dispute the finding and maintain they have complied with PSR rules.
They trace the breach to a recent change in how community development expenditure is treated, affecting costs linked to The Albion Foundation, including facilities, staff time and resources. The club intend to keep backing the foundation’s work and are considering their options over an appeal.
The deduction cuts Albion’s cushion to six points with two matches left, having been eight after Tuesday’s win over Watford. They have dropped two places ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s home game against Ipswich.
Oxford, in the final relegation spot, can now catch the 20th-placed Baggies if they win both games, Albion lose both, and overturn a goal difference of six in Albion’s favour.
Further comment is expected once written reasons are received, with a focus on settling matters on the pitch. A nine-match unbeaten run had lifted Albion clear before this sanction.
