West Bromwich Albion have been charged with an alleged breach of the EFL's profit and sustainability rules, leaving them two points above the Championship relegation zone and facing fresh relegation fears.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the EFL's club financial reporting unit has notified Albion of a PSR breach and given them 14 days to respond. Hearings are usually held within 28 days, and could conclude before the season ends on 25 May.

Albion believed submissions up to 31 December complied with rules that cap three-year losses at £39 million. The club have worked closely with the EFL since Shilen Patel's Bilkul takeover in February 2024 and had remained confident in recent weeks.

Recently published accounts show a £17 million loss for 2024/25, added to £31 million the season before, taking the three-year total since 2022 to £55.6 million. Not all of that counts towards PSR due to permitted add-backs for facilities, infrastructure, the women's team and the academy.

Some reports suggest the breach is minor, but possible sanctions include a points deduction, transfer ban or fine. Under EFL guidelines, any deduction is applied in the season after the breach. Albion are due to finish at Sheffield Wednesday on 2 May, and their status could still be unresolved.

James Morrison has overseen a seven-match unbeaten run as the club battle the drop, with four fixtures remaining. Last month Leicester City, currently second-bottom, received a six-point deduction over charges linked to their 2023/24 Championship campaign.
