Despite the end of the campaign seeing Albion flourish under James Morrison, as a 10-game unbeaten run propelled the Baggies to Championship safety, most of it was marred by incompetency from Morrison’s predecessors.

No more so than Welshman Eric Ramsay, who replaced Ryan Mason at the turn of 2026 after Albion had suffered a 10th straight away league defeat and were left 18th in the second tier standings.

In the hope that Ramsay could turn Albion’s fortunes around, he would do anything but, statistically going down as both West Brom’s worst performing and shortest staying permanent boss in the club’s history, with a series of baffling decisions leading to the Black Country outfit being embroiled in a relegation dog fight.

Ramsay would finish his 44-day and nine-game stay in charge of West Brom with a 0% win record, drawing four and losing five of his nine matches, with a dismal 1-1 draw at home to relegation rivals Charlton Athletic proving to be the final nail in his coffin.

Thankfully, for the Baggies, they didn’t push the button too late, with Morrison just about having enough time to galvanise the squad and steer them to safety on the penultimate game of the campaign, despite the club being handed a two-point deduction from the EFL for breaching P&S rules.

When reflecting on Ramsay, he now eclipses the likes of Nobby Stiles, Steve Bruce and Alan Pardew for Albion’s biggest laughing stock on the touchline, with the Welshman bound to never come near The Hawthorns again.

But despite having such a disastrous short spell in charge of Albion, West Brom supporters will be amazed at the latest job the 34-year-old has been linked to, with Ramsay potentially in line to be rewarded for his failures in B71.

As the opening stages of the 2026-27 season continue to tick on by, the Welsh national team job appeared to be open for new blood due to the impending exit of Craig Bellamy.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City attacker was expected to complete a move to become Burnley’s new boss, which was seen as an appealing prospect given the Clarets are once again expected to be in the mix for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Since then, journalist Ben Jacobs has reported that Bellamy’s move to Turf Moor has fallen through due to issues over his backroom staff, with the FA of Wales believed to be surprised by this news.

However, at the time of Bellamy’s move to Burnley looking like it would go through, BBC Sport Wales journalist Dafydd Pritchard reported that Wales were looking at replacements for Bellamy, and had former Baggies boss Eric Ramsay on their shortlist.

Other names included Steve Cooper, who had recently departed Brondby, and Rob Edwards, who had just suffered a dramatic sacking by Wolves.

West Brom fans will be stunned to see Eric Ramsay, Wales link

West Brom fans must be thinking what on earth the Welsh FA are looking at by placing Eric Ramsay on their shortlist for the national team job.

Of course, Ramsay has worked inside the Welsh Football Association before as an assistant coach to Rob Page back in 2023, but you would think his utterly woeful time in charge of Albion would lead them to think that he isn’t the man to lead Welsh football forward.

When taking charge at The Hawthorns, Ramsay clearly didn’t know what system suited the players at his disposal, implementing a three-back setup that had their most creative outlet in Mikey Johnston playing at right wing-back.

Not to mention the entire Baggies squad looked puzzled at what to do on the pitch with his startlingly different methods compared to Mason, with the squad’s confidence firmly on the floor by the time he departed The Hawthorns.

Based off of his time at Albion, it would likely be the case that Welsh football would be dragged to a dangerously low level under Ramsay, while it’s unclear to see how he would handle the expectation and pressure of a whole nation on his shoulders when he couldn’t turn around the fortunes of a struggling club in the Championship.

If Ramsay was to land a top job like that after his time at West Brom, then Baggies supporters will start to think that Ramsay did something extraordinarily right in a previous life, with the ex-Minnesota United boss nowhere near equipped to take over Welsh football.
