Irons were desperate for victory in a relegation six-pointer at the London Stadium
West Ham slumped to another defeat as they were beaten 2-1 late on by Nottingham Forest to pile the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo.
In a game that both sides were desperate to win, the Irons made the better start, taking the clash to their counterparts.
Forest left-back Neco Williams had the first sighting of goal, however, with his dipping drive acrobatically kept out by Alphonse Areola.
It was the Hammers who went ahead, as a Crysencio Summerville corner was flicked into his own net by Murillo, under pressure from the returning Tomas Soucek at the near post on 13 minutes.
West Ham could not make their momentum count in the first half, but went in at the interval knowing that they had been the better side, despite Callum Hudson-Odoi rattling an effort off the crossbar with Areola beaten all ends up.
The hosts were pegged back inside ten minutes of the restart, as Nicolas Dominguez wriggled free from an Elliot Anderson corner to flick into the far corner, with Nuno’s side undone by yet another set play.
Sean Dyche’s visitors, who sat four points clear of their opponents before kick off, grew into the game, and it was Dilane Bakwa who had a big impact off the right flank, coming on for Omari Hutchinson at half-time.
The forward was direct in his play, attacking Ollie Scarles with his pace and trickery.
It was one final set play that undid West Ham, as Areola was adjudged to have made contact with Morgan Gibbs-White as he rushed to punch a Forest free kick in the 88th minute.
VAR awarded a penalty, and the Forest captain dusted himself down to stroke home from 12 yards and earn a huge victory for Dyche’s men, who end a four-game losing streak.
It leave Nuno’s Hammers seven points adrift in the Premier League drop zone, with the Portuguese’s position looking infinitely more precarious by the day.
