Hammers desperate for a win in relegation battle
West Ham lost further ground in the race to stay in the Premier League as they slumped to yet another defeat, this time to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were beaten 2-1 at the London Stadium, with Sean Dyche’s Forest escaping with a late three points courtesy of a Morgan Gibbs-White penalty.
The Hammers had the better of the first 45 minutes, taking the lead through a Murillo own goal from Crysencio Summerville’s corner on 13 minutes. They continued to threaten, but could not find that elusive second. They went in at the break ahead, and thought they were two up shortly after the restart when Summerville lashed past Matz Sels, but the goal was chalked off for an offside against debutant Taty Castellanos.
Forest grew back into the encounter, and equalised on 55 minutes when diminuative midfielder Nicolas Dominguez nodded home an Elliot Anderson corner. They snatched all three points late on when VAR adjudged Alphonse Areola to have clattered Gibbs-White when coming to punch a floated free kick, and the Forest captain dusted himself down to win the game for Dyche’s men and leave the Irons seven points adrift of safety.
