A simply stunning display from West Ham sees the Irons head to the top of the Championship table, while Wrexham taste an embarrassing defeat in their first-ever outing at the London Stadium.

Continuing on from their recent form with 3 successive victories heading into tonight’s clash with Wrexham in the Championship, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side outclassed and dominated Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham side in a 6-0 thrashing.

Once Jarrod Bowen deservedly broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 28th minute, the Red Dragons proved no match for the quality of a West Ham side who now sit top of the table, determined to instantly return to the Premier League, while Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham sit just 3 points above the drop zone.

As it happened

It was a cagey affair in the opening five minutes at The London Stadium, with neither side able to break down the opposition defence and create a goal-scoring opportunity to break the deadlock. But it was the hosts who registered the first shot of the evening when a whipped ball in from the left flank was met by the head of Taty Castellanos, but the effort sailed over the bar.

As the clock ticked past 11 minutes, it was Jarrod Bowen who came ever so close to breaking the stalemate as the tricky attacker broke free down the right and fired an effort on goal, only to be tipped onto the bar by Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Paterson.

Almost immediately after hitting the bar, the Irons had another golden opportunity to go 1-0 up as a corner by Arne Engels found Konstantinos Mavropanos inside the 18-yard box, and his headed chance glanced just wide of the far post.

West Ham once again came close to opening the score after a neat bit of attacking play helped craft a wonderful chance for Joël Piroe to get his 3rd of the season, but he struck his close-range effort over the bar.

Not long after Piroe could have given the hosts the lead, it was West Ham’s talisman, Bowen, who found the back of the net. It came after a wonderfully worked attack that started from defence, saw Morato get played through on the left wing before playing an inviting low driven cross along the box into the path of Bowen who’s first time finish smashed the back of the net on the brink of the half-hour mark.

West Ham’s defence was brought into action as Wrexham managed to get their first real sight at goal after they dispossessed the Irons high up the field, and an attempt from George Dobson seemed like it was destined to nestle into the bottom left corner, but Mavropanos managed to get back and clear it away from the goal line just in time.

The hosts swiftly doubled their lead after nearly being brought back to level pegging as a sublime through ball fell neatly into the path of Castellanos, who cut inside and laid the ball on a plate for Piroe to hammer home into the back of the net, doubling Nuno’s side’s advantage in the last big action of the first half.

The Hammers continued the second half as they ended the first, as they made it 3-0 in the 47th minute as Bowen played in a pinpoint cross from a corner, which found the head of Mavropanos, who escaped his marker, and he headed home with ease through the legs of the Wrexham keeper.

West Ham continued to pile on the pressure, and a swift counter-attack saw Bowen receive the ball on the right wing, sharply cut inside and whip a low effort towards the far post; he beat the keeper, but the ball flew just past the post.

Wrexham’s Friday night in London went from bad to worse just after the hour, after a poorly executed corner from the visitors gave Kyle Walker-Peters the chance to excel forward before slipping in Castellanos, who got himself on the scoresheet, superbly finding the bottom corner.

With both dugouts making multiple changes, the hosts lost a bit of their relentless momentum, but nonetheless they got their fifth of the night. Substitute Mohamadou Kante found himself on the scoresheet after Manor Solomon chipped the ball over the top of the defence, directly into the path of Kante, who showed great composure to find the back of the net with an excellent finish past Paterson in the 76th minute.

Remarkably, the hosts found a sixth in the 82nd minute after Walker-Peters broke through Wrexham into the box once again before passing to Solomon, whose curling effort bounced off the inside of the post and into the back of the net.

West Ham couldn’t get their seventh late on in the game, but it was a performance to remember for the Irons, totally outperforming the side from North Wales and setting the standard for the rest of the season, a true statement of intent as the final whistle blew.
