West Ham claimed their first Premier League victory under Nuno Espírito Santo, coming from behind to beat Newcastle United 3-1 at the London Stadium.
The visitors made the ideal start when Jacob Murphy struck after just four minutes, firing low into the corner only seconds after Jarrod Bowen had rattled the post at the other end.
The hosts regrouped quickly and thought they had a penalty midway through the first half when Bowen went down under a challenge from Malick Thiaw, but referee Robert Jones overturned his initial decision following a VAR review which showed the defender had touched the ball first.
The Hammers’ pressure eventually told when Lucas Paquetá levelled with a superb left-footed drive from distance after Crysencio Summerville’s cross was cleared into his path.
West Ham then completed the turnaround shortly before the break as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s low delivery was turned into his own net by Sven Botman, giving them a 2-1 lead at half-time.
The Magpies saw plenty of possession after the restart but struggled to test Alphonse Areola, while West Ham continued to threaten on the counter.
Freddie Potts thought he had marked his first league start with a goal, but it was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
The result was sealed deep into stoppage time when Bowen’s effort slipped through Nick Pope’s legs and substitute Tomas Soucek followed up to tap in from close range, sparking relief and celebration around the stadium.
The win lifts West Ham above Nottingham Forest into 18th place, three points from safety. Newcastle remain in the bottom half, still without an away league victory in seven months.
