West Ham fans protest despite vital Newcastle win | OneFootball

West Ham United fans have remained inside the London Stadium as part of a sit-in protest against the club’s ownership, following their 3-1 win against Newcastle United.

The Hammers secured their first home win of the Premier League campaign on Sunday, and first under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo.

West Ham had fallen behind inside four minutes through Jacob Murphy’s crisp strike, but responded with a spirited performance at the London Stadium.

Lucas Paqueta’s brilliant effort from distance pulled the hosts level, before a calamitous Sven Botman own goal put the Hammers ahead. Newcastle pushed for an equaliser but it was the East Londoners who sealed the points. After a stoppage-time breakaway, Nick Pope was unable to hold Jarrod Bowen’s effort with Tomas Soucek on hand to turn in the rebound.

Incredibly, the win against Newcastle was West Ham’s first at home in 248 days, since beating Leicester City in February. Nuno celebrated wildly at full-time as his side snapped their losing streak, though many fans remained inside to protest.

Despite celebrating a much-needed win, thousands of fans remained inside the London Stadium to demonstrate against the West Ham ownership. Banners included slogans such as ‘Enough is enough. Time for change’ and ‘Sold our soul’.

The Irons’ supporters are unhappy with the direction of the club and have called for David Sullivan and vice-chair Karren Brady to resign.
