West Ham United have entered preliminary talks to sign Bodø/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg. Rumours are swirling after transfer insider Ekrem Konur broke the news on X, and it seems the East London club are serious about adding the Norwegian international to their ranks. Berg wants a fresh challenge in England. He has done all he can in Scandinavia, and at 28, the clock is ticking for a big move to the Premier League.

It will not be a free run for the Hammers, though. Newly promoted PL side Coventry City are also firmly in the race, setting up a fascinating transfer battle between top-flight prestige and guaranteed minutes in the second tier. Berg raised his profile significantly during Norway’s recent World Cup campaign, running games from deep with an easy composure that caught the eye of several scouts.

A risk worth taking for Nuno Espirito Santo

The numbers behind his recent domestic season tell a compelling story. Berg completely ran the show in the Eliteserien last year. Five goals in 28 games from a deep midfield role helped him scoop the league’s Player of the Year award. He is the heartbeat of that Bodø/Glimt team, regularly touching the ball more than 80 times a match. For a modern manager, that kind of metronomic consistency is incredibly hard to find, especially at a price tag hovering around the €8 million mark.

There is a major problem, though. The Premier League and the Championship are completely different beasts compared to the Norwegian top flight. West Ham fans will naturally look at Berg’s failed stint with Lens in 2022, where he looked completely off the pace and struggled to adapt to the sheer speed of Ligue 1. Nuno Espirito Santo needs energy in the middle of the park in the Championship. Berg brings elite positioning and neat passing, but his complete lack of explosive pace could see him get bypassed easily by the division’s dynamic counter-attacking sides.

Spending €8 million on a player who might just be a squad filler is a gamble. If the Hammers get him for less, he provides decent cover for a long season. Relying on him to anchor a Championship midfield every single week is a massive risk. The club need athletic power to get back to the highest level, and Berg simply does not possess that engine.
