We've only had two weekends of football in the EFL Championship this season, but there are already signs that the division's reputation as being one in which anyone can beat anyone else is likely to remain undiminished. But while several results have already raised eyebrows, but none have sent quite the tremors through the division that Charlton Athletic's shock 2-1 win away to West Ham United has.

Goals in each half from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell gave Charlton a 2-0 lead at The London Stadium, but while Joel Piroe marked his West Ham debut by pulling one back for the Irons with a quarter of an hour still to play, Valentin Castellanos hit the post with a last minute penalty to send all three points back south of the river to The Valley, along with 3,000 happy travelling supporters in a sell-out crowd of 62,000.

And after the match, Charlton's players shared their delight on social media, with one particular post by the goalscorer Campbell provoking replies from several of his fellow players.

Tyreece Campbell's 56th-minute angled shot proved enough to be the difference between West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, and after the match he took to the social media platform Instagram to post a slideshow of picture of himself celebrating his goal afterwards.

He wasn't the only Addick on Instagram, and two of his team-mates were among the many who had something to say about the picture. Miles Leaburn, whose tackle had won the ball, allowing Campbell to score, said, "i want my assist", while another Charlton player, Karlan Grant - who returned to the club at which he started his career last summer following six years at Huddersfield Town - had an emoji-laden reply.

These two weren't the only players to have replied to Campbell's post. A third Charlton player, Harvey Knibbs, felt that one of the pictures in the slideshow reminded him more than a little of the Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, while the QPR player Rumarn Burrell added, "Don’t be doing this against us."

Charlton and West Ham have had similarly surprising starts to the season, but for opposing reasons

Charlton Athletic and West Ham United have similarly surprising starts to the season, albeit for opposite reasons.

Ham started the season amongst the favourites to win promotion back from the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of 2025-26, but their season started with throwing away a two-goal lead at Burnley, and has now continued by losing their opening home match in front of a capacity crowd against London rivals which leaves them in 17th place in the table.

Pre-season predictions for Charlton Athletic were nowhere near as positive. Having won just one of their last nine games of 2025-26, and after finishing a lowly 19th in the Championship table, they've been expected to struggle again this season.

But as West Ham have struggled in their opening games of 2026-27, Charlton have flourished in theirs. On the opening weekend of the season, they came from behind to record a strong 2-1 win against a Derby County side who are fancied to do well in the Championship this season, and a win away to West Ham leaves them as one of three sides in the division to have won their first two matches of the 2026-27, alongside Millwall and West Bromwich Albion.
