West Ham United are among the clubs in the race to sign Udinese defender Jaka Bijol, according to Messaggero Veneto.
The Slovenian defender enjoyed a breakout campaign last term, helping Udinese keep six clean sheets in 24 Serie A appearances. He won 65% of his duels, impressing particularly towards the end of the season.
Bijol is a no-nonsense defender who likes to clear the ball out of the danger zone, recording an average of 6.05 clearances, 1.55 blocks and 1.8 tackles per game.
His excellent performances have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including one top-six side. Nottingham Forest and the Hammers are also among the suitors.
The Hammers are looking to improve their defence, which conceded the most goals in the Premier League outside of the relegated trio last term.
Manager Julen Lopetegui has already brought former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Max Kilman, but he needs a partner in the heart of defence.
West Ham are also set to lose Kurt Zouma, who is on his way to the United Arab Emirates to join Shabab Al-Ahli.
They reportedly had OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo on top of their shortlist of targets to reinforce the backline.
However, Italian heavyweights Juventus are close to getting a deal over the line.
While he is not a household name like Todibo, Bijol could be a fantastic partner for Kilman in central defence.
He has settled well in Serie A over the past two seasons, gradually improving thanks to the stability and consistent game time.
Bijol carried those excellent league performances into the 2024 European Championship, starting all four matches before their round of 16 exit against Portugal.
He was outstanding, helping Slovenia keep two clean sheets while winning 56% of his defensive duels. He adeptly marshalled Harry Kane when they faced England.
His passing may not be as crisp as it should be, but Lopetegui can help refine his ability on the ball.
