The Hammers were stunned by two quick second half goals at Villa Park
West Ham lost their first match under new manager Graham Potter and were knocked out of the FA Cup with it as they lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Lucas Paqueta got the Potter regime off to a perfect start by scoring a fine goal to give the Hammers the lead on nine minutes.
But West Ham, who dominated the early exchanges, faded badly and were beaten by two goals in five second-half minutes.
First Amadou Onana stabbed home, before England international Morgan Rogers slotted home the winner to consign West Ham to defeat in Potter’s opener.
Dom Smith was at Villa Park to rate the West Ham players’ performances…
Lukasz Fabianski 5
Readjusted well to save Ian Maatsen’s deflected strike. Could perhaps have done better for the opening goal and held the initial shot.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7
Typically tireless from the right-back, who moved further forward when Crysencio Summerville was taken off at the break.
Konstantinos Mavropanos 4
Costly slip in the second half. Seemed to injure himself by trying to head the ball on the ground, Phil Jones-style. A liability.
Max Kilman 6
Fine pass over the top for the opening goal but reacted too sluggishly for Villa’s second.
Ollie Scarles 7
“He’s one of our own,” sang the Hammers faithful about the 19-year-old on his first domestic start. A brave performance from the academy product, who delivered a dangerous corner in the first half.
Tomas Soucek 6
Full of energy in the West Ham midfield. Tried to knit things together.
Much more positive display from the Mexican, who ran his socks off and distributed the ball well for the 85 minutes he was on.
Mohammed Kudus 6
Involved in the opening goal and produced some nice dribbles, but not as influential as he often is.
Lucas Paqueta 7
Played very well, linking the attack as its lynchpin, often as an inverted left winger. Scored a fine goal.

Crysencio Summerville 6
Assisted the West Ham goal with a precision cross. Replaced at the break with a suspected injury.
Niclas Fullkrug 6
Desperately unlucky as he felt his hamstring go and had to be replaced as early as 15 minutes in. Won a vital header that contributed to the opening goal.
Subs:
Danny Ings (Fullkrug, 15’) 5
Did very little on the night, but West Ham did fade badly after that opening 15 minutes, for which he wasn’t on the pitch.
Vladimir Coufal (Summerville, 46’) 5
Stayed with the back-line and defended okay, but allowed one goal down his flank.
Aaron Cresswell (Scarles, 77’) N/A
Carlos Soler (Mavropanos, 85’) N/A
Luis Guilherme (Alvarez, 85’) N/A
