Do not let those basic numbers fool you. Look at the underlying data. His expected goals rating reached 6.97, which put him comfortably in the top 79th percentile of all Premier League players last term. He banged in 54 shots. That is serious attacking output. Then Summerville went to the World Cup in America and absolutely flew. Two goals, two assists, and a brilliant curling strike against Japan that had everyone talking. His price tag shot up overnight.

Let us look at this realistically. Roma are trying it on with a £39m opening gambit. West Ham are completely right to stand their ground and say no to that specific number. But sitting there demanding the full £50m when you are preparing for life in the Championship is a massive gamble. The player has already said yes to Rome. An unhappy footballer who wants out rarely performs well on a cold Tuesday night away from home. The longer this drags on, the more power shifts over to the buying club.

Nuno needs to act smart here. The sensible move involves pushing Roma up towards £44-46m. Gianluca Di Marzio suggests the Italian giants are ready to stretch that far anyway. Shake hands on that compromise, take the cash, and reinvest it straight back into the squad. Losing Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham for a massive, record-breaking £85m fee has already ripped the spine out of the team. The squad needs serious work if they want to bounce straight back up. Abdul Fatawu is high on the wishlist as a replacement. The Leicester man is a proper talent and would cost a fraction of the money Roma are dangling for Summerville.

Holding out just to prove a point over the £50m figure could backfire horribly. Manchester United might easily decide to spend their budget on a centre back instead. Roma could get fed up and look elsewhere. Suddenly, Nuno is stuck with a disgruntled winger who does not want to be in the Championship, and the club get absolutely nothing. That helps nobody. The manager needs bodies through the door and wins on the board, not a pat on the back for being tough in negotiations. Take the money now and start rebuilding.
