West Ham United face a major squad change after Aston Villa agreed a deal for their 28-year-old right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that all parties agreed on August 18.
Romano says Villa will take the defender on loan with a mandatory purchase clause, ending the disagreement over a straight loan proposal. The player has given his approval to Unai Emery’s project, while the clubs have reached a full agreement. Villa have received the green light for the medical, the next step before the move becomes official.
The report follows West Ham‘s rejection of Villa’s first approach. Romano’s update indicates that Villa found a formula acceptable to the Hammers, while the defender can now prepare for a return to Premier League football and Champions League commitments.
West Ham’s position makes sense after relegation. The club had placed a £25 million valuation on Wan-Bissaka, and a mandatory purchase clause protects that figure far better than a simple loan.
He recorded 25 Premier League appearances and 2,083 minutes in 2025/26, adding two assists. Those numbers show regular involvement, even though his season ended with West Ham dropping into the Championship. He had earned the club’s Hammer of the Year award for 2024/25, so selling him after relegation still shows clear logic.
Kyle Walker-Peters took greater control of the right-back role late in the campaign, making Wan-Bissaka’s departure easier to justify. West Ham can remove his Premier League wages from their books while securing income for a rebuild under EFL financial pressures.

For Villa, the appeal centres on reliability in one-on-one defensive situations. Wan-Bissaka remains a proven top-flight defender, and his record gives Emery another experienced option alongside Matty Cash.
Representing DR Congo, he started all four of their 2026 World Cup matches as they reached the knockout stage. That matters for a club preparing for Premier League and European demands.
The transfer structure gives Villa breathing room because the initial move comes as a loan, although the mandatory purchase means the long-term commitment remains. Kosta Nedeljkovic’s move to Rangers has created squad space, and Villa can now add a defender who knows the Premier League inside out.
For West Ham United, the deal turns a Championship problem into income. For Villa, it could give Emery a defensive alternative without forcing an immediate full payment.
