WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Hammers this morning.
The 54-year-old replaces former West Ham United boss Rehanne Skinner who was sacked last week. Gaurino has signed an initial 18-month deal at The Chigwell Construction Stadium.
Gaurino enjoyed a successful playing career which saw her turn out for the likes of Flammamonza, Cascine Vica and Torres at club level. On the international stage, she was capped by Italy on 99 occasions.
Since hanging up her boots, Gaurino has moved into coaching. She worked in the Italian youth set-up before guiding Juventus to four Serie A Femminile Athora league titles. Gaurino has most recently been coaching Inter Milan.
After being appointed West Ham United head coach, Gaurino said “I’m so happy to be joining West Ham United. It is a Club with a big history and strong values that align with my own.
“I’ve spoken with the Board and I’m really excited by the project here. There is a lot of talent and experience in the team, and I want to support the girls to develop as individuals but also as a collective.
“I want to build a team that is organised, aggressive with the ball and that tries to recognise and use space. The mentality of the team – the togetherness and hard work – is the most important thing.
“I’m proud to be here and I’m looking forward to the chapter ahead in the best league in the world.”
Gaurino will initially be assisted by Steve Kirby while she is expected to bolster her coaching team in the coming weeks.
