West Ham United Are Ready To Sell This English Midfielder: Why Is It The Better Decision Under Nuno?

West Ham United had high hopes for the ongoing season. However, the early weeks have produced as many questions as answers for Nuno Espírito Santo and his squad. The 1-1 draw at Everton showed areas of concern, but the biggest talking point was that James Ward-Prowse did not feature in the manager’s first matchday squad.

Ward-Prowse faces an uncertain future at West Ham

According to talkSPORT on 30 September, the club plans to listen to offers for the midfielder in the January window. This reveals that the Hammers will now follow a different plan. The report added that Ward-Prowse may look at a return to Southampton. He spent two decades after joining their academy in 2003.

Ward-Prowse became a symbol of loyalty at Southampton. He rose through the youth ranks and went on to make 410 senior appearances across 12 years. The 30-year-old’s move to West Ham in 2023 looked like a chance to test himself at a higher level, and he offered reliable delivery from set-pieces.

Yet Nuno’s decision to leave him out suggests his role could soon be reduced, and that raises doubts about whether his time in East London will finish sooner rather than later. For a player once central to his boyhood side, the idea of a return to St Mary’s could present both a personal and professional reset.

Why the Hammers may choose to sell Ward-Prowse?

There are several reasons why West Ham may have to sell Ward-Prowse under Nuno. First comes tactics, because Nuno favours compact, counter-attacking football with an emphasis on pace and pressing. Ward-Prowse thrives when he can dictate possession and deliver from set-pieces, but this style demands midfielders who cover ground quickly and shield the defence. His skillset, therefore, looks less suited to the current manager’s demands.

Nuno’s history also offers clues. During Ward-Prowse’s loan spell at Nottingham Forest with the same coach, the Englishman often came off the bench rather than starting. This shows the manager may again limit his involvement. Money matters too, since West Ham now follow a sell-to-buy model.

A sale would cut wages, raise funds, and allow the club to recruit players more suited to Nuno’s system. Reports already link them with Pape Gueye, valued at €35 million by Villarreal. They are also looking at Mario Stroeykens from Anderlecht. Both players could reshape the midfield and attack.

For Ward-Prowse, the outcome depends on whether Nuno gives him any role beyond being a substitute. For West Ham, the choice could mark the beginning of a new structure that fits the manager’s plan.
