West Ham United have received a warning over a possible move for a 39-year-old free agent, with former club scout Mick Brown urging them to avoid signing Jamie Vardy. Brown views the deal as a “huge gamble”, despite Vardy’s famous name, availability without a transfer fee and the temptation that follows a veteran striker’s proven record.

Vardy wants to keep playing after leaving Cremonese when his one-year contract expired in June. Last season, he scored seven goals and supplied two assists in 29 Serie A appearances, numbers that made him Cremonese’s second-highest league scorer.

Interest has continued after the transfer window closed, with Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday among clubs linked with the former Leicester City captain. Brown believes West Ham could be tempted by his reputation and free-agent status, but he argues that Vardy can no longer deliver the quality and consistency required to lead a promotion campaign.

Should West Ham go after Jamie Vardy?

For me, Brown’s argument holds up because West Ham United need immediate Championship output rather than another big name. Vardy’s record commands respect, yet age matters when a club expect a striker to handle a 46-game league schedule and cup ties.

“There is no way West Ham should be making a move to sign Jamie Vardy,” Brown told Football Insider.

“I don’t doubt he’s been on their radar, because he’s available on a free transfer, he’s a big name, and everybody thinks of the old Jamie Vardy from his time at Leicester.

“But he’s not that player any more; he’s nearly 40 years old, he’s not going to give you the quality and consistency that you’d want from him.

“I know how things work at West Ham, and to be honest it wouldn’t surprise me because they will be tempted to make a move, but it’s not a move that would make sense.

“Obviously the manager has wanted to strengthen his squad, and when the window is closed it can be tempting to look at free transfers.

“But is Jamie Vardy going to be the man to fire West Ham to promotion? Maybe five years ago, but certainly not at this stage of his career. It would be a huge gamble.”

At Leicester, his explosiveness gave defenders constant problems. That threat has naturally declined. His Cremonese figures still show useful finishing, but seven league goals from 29 appearances hardly guarantees promotion firepower, especially for a side under pressure on Nuno Espírito Santo.

West Ham United should prioritise a different striker profile

Nuno needs forwards who can work hard, press, attack space and link quickly during transitions. Vardy can still punish mistakes inside the box, yet West Ham United would risk building too much around moments that may arrive less often at 39.

There is another concern. West Ham have already started the Championship campaign and beat Wolves 4-2 on September 1, so the squad needs players who can contribute immediately rather than spend weeks adapting. A free transfer can look attractive after the window closes, but no fee does not make wages, fitness demands or opportunity cost disappear.

Vardy’s broadcasting commitments add another factor, although that alone should not decide the issue. His experience, mentality and dressing-room presence holds value, and a short deal could work in a limited role. Even so, West Ham need promotion insurance, not nostalgia. Brown’s warning feels fair because this would ask a 39-year-old striker to solve a problem that demands consistency every weekend.
