West Ham Handed Major 27-Year-Old Fitness Concern After 73-Minute International Outing: Why Do They Need Him Protected? | OneFootball

West Ham have a fresh reason to keep a close eye on Manor Solomon after the winger completed 73 minutes for Israel against Austria.

Kris Gonzo, senior columnist for Claret & Hugh, reported before the international fixture that Solomon faced four Nations League matches across 11 days. The schedule raised concern because the 27-year-old had become a significant part of Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans since joining from Tottenham Hotspur.

That concern remains relevant after Israel’s 3-1 defeat in Linz. Solomon started the match and reached his 50th senior international cap before leaving the field with 17 minutes remaining. Israel had levelled the score when he departed, but Austria later scored twice in the closing stages.

The international schedule gives Solomon very little recovery time. Israel face the Republic of Ireland on September 27, Kosovo on October 1 and Ireland again on October 4. West Ham’s next Championship fixture comes against Queens Park Rangers on October 9.

For the Hammers, the issue goes beyond one match. Solomon has already played every Championship fixture this season, starting seven of eight league games, while registering two goals and two assists.

Why do West Ham need Solomon protected?

In my view, Nuno needs Solomon available because his role gives the attack a different dimension. The Israeli can carry the ball from wide areas, attack space and then move inside when the opening appears.

That mattered against Millwall, too. Solomon switched into a central No.10 role during the second half and later produced the cross that allowed Dinos Mavropanos to equalise.

His influence has grown quickly. After leaving Tottenham, the forward joined West Ham in August and scored on his Championship debut against Burnley. He then scored and assisted during the 6-0 win over Wrexham, giving Nuno another reliable route into the final third.

There is another tactical point worth considering. Solomon can create danger without staying glued to the touchline, which can pull a full-back inside and leave space for an overlapping left-back. Gonzo specifically argued that a settled partnership behind the winger could improve his output, with Morato, Ollie Scarles and Adama Boiro among the possible options.

That partnership is important because Solomon’s movement becomes harder to defend when another player attacks the space outside him. A consistent left-sided combination could give Nuno more variety instead of asking the Israeli to create everything himself.

Gonzo’s concern about Solomon’s previous knee injury at Tottenham adds another factor, although his report stops short of suggesting that another problem is inevitable.

For West Ham, sensible minute management makes sense. Solomon has already handled a heavy domestic workload, and four international fixtures bring more matches, travel and recovery demands. The key now is getting the winger back to Rush Green with his fitness intact, because Nuno has built plenty of his attacking threat around those quick movements from the left.
