Weverton explains Palmeiras exit, says you have to be courageous | OneFootball

Weverton’s call-up to a second World Cup surprised many and came after he left Palmeiras for Grêmio early this year, a move he admits was difficult. The 38-year-old says courage guided his choice.

In April, Grêmio visited league leaders Palmeiras in Barueri, the hosts won 2-1 and Weverton was applauded by the home crowd. He thanked supporters after the final whistle.

He switched clubs amid a contest for the number one spot with Carlos Miguel, who established himself after Weverton’s departure. He also held talks with Bahia but received a significant salary offer from the Gaúcho side and was released.

"It really was not an easy decision, given all I have at Palmeiras, but in life we have to be courageous. Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions that will bring rewards, and that is what I did," he said, speaking to FIFA.

"I am very grateful to Palmeiras and their fans for everything I experienced there. It was a decision based on prayer, asking God if it was what he wanted for my life. I am sure it was an important decision for my career."

Weverton made 454 appearances for Palmeiras and left as the most decorated goalkeeper in the club’s history with 12 trophies, including two Libertadores, three Campeonatos Brasileiros, four Paulistões, one Copa do Brasil, one Recopa Sul-Americana and one Supercopa do Brasil.

He will be with Brazil for their 2026 World Cup opener against Morocco in New Jersey on Saturday at 19:00.
