Birmingham City finally returned to winning ways on Sunday, with a 2-0 home win over play-off chasing Wrexham giving Chris Davies an important victory.

Birmingham's first season back in the English second tier hasn't exactly gone to plan.

The Blues were expected to be fighting in and amongst the top six for the majority of this campaign, but things have not panned out that way, and the club looks almost certain to spend another year in the Championship as a result.

Chris Davies, the man who orchestrated the record-breaking points tally for Birmingham in League One last season, has failed to adapt his side sufficiently to the trials and tribulations of the second tier and has come under scrutiny for his role.

Prior to victory over Wrexham, Birmingham had won just one of their last eight league games, and as a result, had fallen away from any sort of play-off threat.

Scoring his first goal for the club in the victory was Spanish winger Carlos Vicente, who joined the club in January from Deportivo Alaves for around £7 million, and has since issued a message to Blues supporters via X.

Vicente scored the opener to send Birmingham on their way to victory over Wrexham, in what was his first goal for the club since his winter move, with Christoph Klarer's second sealing all three points for the Blues.

The Spaniard has endured a tricky start to life at St Andrews since the move, having battled for a place on the right flank with Patrick Roberts, limiting his minutes as a result.

Though he was given the nod by Davies to start against Wrexham, and he repaid his gaffer by heading home Kai Wagner's cross at the back post.

The 26-year-old has since taken to social media to send a message to Birmingham supporters.

In what proved to be a Man of the Match performance, with Vicente a threat down the right flank the entire game, the Spaniard has said that he is delighted to have scored his first goal in Birmingham colours, as the Blues get back to winning ways.

He and Birmingham fans will be hoping that this is the first of many for the club, and after a slow start to life at St Andrews, this goal will trigger a rich vein of form from the Spaniard.

With just four games left of this season, there is little time to make a seismic impact, and almost certainly not enough time for Birmingham to mount a play-off push, though, nevertheless, he will be hoping to finish this campaign strong and carry that momentum into next year.

Few people will be hoping that Vicente can continue this form than head coach Davies.

Davies has come under increased scrutiny in recent months after failing to adequately push his side for a play-off place, and as a result, his role in the St Andrews dugout has been questioned.

Failure to finish this season strongly will almost certainly see a change in the dugout over the summer, with the ambitious Birmingham owners looking to take the side into the Premier League as soon as possible.

Davies has been afforded over £50 million worth of incomings over the past two years, and with that level of investment, it's difficult to see the Blues owners as anything other than disappointed, especially with fellow promoted club Wrexham fighting amongst the top six.

Vicente will need to continue to pose a threat down the right flank in the final four games, as his form could be vital in Davies remaining in his role heading into next year.
