What happened to Aaron Ramsdale as ex-Gunner drops to 4th choice at Southampton? | OneFootball

The former Arsenal goalkeeper returned from a loan spell at Newcastle United this summer, only to find Southampton’s hierarchy already firmly established.

When Aaron Ramsdale left Arsenal for Southampton in the summer of 2024, the move offered him the chance to re-establish himself as a first-choice Premier League goalkeeper after being ousted by David Raya.

Two years later, he finds himself fourth in the pecking order at a Championship club where he has not even made the first six matchday squads of the season.

Southampton paid an initial £18 million for Ramsdale, with the deal potentially rising to £25 million through add-ons.

His first season ended in relegation, however, and he spent 2025–26 on loan at Newcastle United.

Newcastle did not make that move permanent, leaving Ramsdale to return to Southampton this summer.

What awaited him was not a route back into the side but a goalkeeping hierarchy in which he was already on the outside, with no way back in.

Daniel Peretz, 26, is Southampton’s first-choice goalkeeper, George Long, 32, is second choice and Jamie Jones, 37, has been brought back as the senior third-choice option.

Ramsdale, 28, is therefore fourth choice and, rather than featuring with the first team on matchdays, has been playing for Southampton’s Under-21s at his own request.

His position appears solely to be the consequence of decisions made by Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert.

Eckert committed to Peretz as his No 1 after Southampton signed the goalkeeper permanently from Bayern Munich for just £6m in June following a successful loan spell.

He has also confirmed that Long, valued at around £150k, remains his second choice. Their third choice is worth nothing according to Transfermarkt.

Those decisions did not change when Ramsdale, still valued at around £10m, failed to secure a move before the transfer window closed at the start of September.

Eckert has said Ramsdale’s responsibility is now to “support the team”, while making clear that the goalkeeper has dealt with the situation professionally. There are no injury issues at play.

“The reality is that Rambo’s story at the football club has started before I came in,” Eckert told BBC Radio Solent.

“We’ve had honest conversations from the very first day of pre-season to the last day of the transfer window and he’s still a part of the group.

“The expectations for him are clear to support the team in the best way and he’s been very professional in doing that so far.

“Let’s see what happens. Aaron also became a father for the second time a couple of days ago, my expectation is that he is a Southampton player.”

For a player who left Arsenal in search of regular football, the outcome is startling. Ramsdale has gone from a £25 million Premier League starter to fourth choice at Southampton in the Championship in the space of two seasons.

When you look at the state of some goalkeepers at Premier League clubs this season, it all makes even less sense that he was unable to secure a move.

Ramsdale will be hoping that January brings better news.

Southampton are currently 18th in the Championship with two wins from four and five goals conceded.
