Gavin Strachan has joined West Brom’s coaching staff alongside James Morrison after six years at Celtic, arriving with a recent Premiership and Scottish Cup double and a reputation for sharp tactical work.

At Parkhead he worked under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill, having previously been assistant at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United. As a player he featured for nine English clubs, with loans at Dundee and Motherwell.

O’Neill hailed his input as vital to last season’s success on Strachan’s departure. His influence at Celtic was often seen on set pieces, including four goals from corner phases in the opening three Premiership games of 2022/23, something Postecoglou openly credited to him.

After a brief stint at Ilkeston Town in 2015, he became Darren Ferguson’s assistant at Doncaster. They went down, then won promotion in 2016/17 and finished mid-table the next season. Ferguson quit in 2018, rejoined Peterborough in January 2019 and took Strachan back.

“I signed him as a player and he did very well,” Barry Fry said. “I gave him the opportunity to be the under-18s manager and he did a superb job. He’s a very thoughtful guy, always wanted to do his coaching badges and always wanted to be a coach.” The remarks were made to The Athletic in 2020.

Lennon later appointed him in June 2020 and considered him the outstanding candidate, while Strachan called it an opportunity he could not turn down. Albion will hope his expertise, particularly on set pieces, could aid a climb towards the Championship’s upper reaches.
