Charlton Athletic have plenty to mull over this January, including whether or not they are going to retain the service of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan from Crystal Palace.

Rak-Sakyi bagged his sixth goal of the season for Charlton on Sunday, as the Addicks beat Portsmouth 3-1 to start 2023 in perfect fashion.

Yet, there’s lingering speculation surrounding Rak-Sakyi and where he will be playing his football beyond this month.

Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall were amongst the clubs linked with a 2023 swooping for the forward prior to Christmas, with Alan Nixon touching on how a new loan opportunity could loom.

As 2022 came to an end, Rak-Sakyi was again linked with a move away from Charlton, with The Sun reporting how Barnsley were interested in a double raid on Crystal Palace to take the 20-year-old alongside Luke Plange.

Come New Year’s Day, Rak-Sakyi was putting speculation behind him, playing his first 90 minutes since late November as Dean Holden’s side dispatched Portsmouth 3-1 at Fratton Park.

Rak-Sakyi opened the scoring on the afternoon, only for his goal to be cancelled out by Connor Ogilvie. Scott Fraser put Charlton back in-charge of proceedings, before an Owen Dale own goal secured the points and only a sixth win of the season in stoppage time.

It was a reminder of what the winger can offer Charlton in League One and underlined why they’d surely be keen to retain him.

However, opportunities at the top of League One and even the Championship look like they will be on the table this month, throwing a spanner in the works.

If Palace want their talented forward challenging himself in a harsher environment, it will be taken out of Charlton’s hands this month. A goal and 90 minutes to kickstart 2023 will have done the Addicks’ chances of retaining him no harm, though, heading into what’s sure to be a tough January window to manoeuvre through.

One thing Charlton don’t need is added complications.
