What Southampton need in the 2026 summer transfer window

Sainstmarching.com reports Southampton’s summer focus is targeted depth after Cyle Larin and Daniel Peretz turned loans permanent. Retention is a priority, but cover for Finn Azaz, another goalkeeper and a midfielder are seen as essentials.

The duo lost only one league game in Saints colours, Peretz’s first match against Hull City. Johannes Spors has work to do to keep recruitment sharp while holding on to as many starters as possible.

“Our main goal for this transfer window is not to make money, it's to make at least the same quality if not better team for the next season,” said chairman Dragan Solak to BBC Radio Solent.

Azaz played through late-season knee trouble, often strapped, and cannot be asked to shoulder a 46-game Championship again. “[If nobody's leaving, I have a full team]. But we need somebody able to play at the level of Finn at his position, although the problem is Finn insists on playing every minute,” Solak told the Daily Echo.

Peretz has signed, and the club are close to adding back-up George Long. With Jamie Jones and Alex McCarthy out of contract, and Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu likely to depart, a second-choice goalkeeper is needed.

They will recoup over £20m for Ramsdale and Bazunu, and only a small fraction will need to be spent on the deputy after first-choice Peretz cost under £7m. Whoever arrives must be ready to step in at short notice.

Caspar Jander’s representatives are pushing for a move back to Germany, and Shea Charles may have suitors after Manchester United and Everton registered interest. The Saints should prepare for at least one exit and a midfield signing, perhaps targeting experienced EFL midfielder Dan Neil, now a free agent.

Whatever unfolds, Spors needs contingencies. Aside from the disappointing arrival of striker Damion Downs, his recent work has been positive. Another strong window, opening on June 15, will be vital for a 2026/27 promotion push.
