Southampton begin their Carabao Cup campaign with a trip to Colchester United on Saturday.

League position offers Southampton no guarantees. The U’s will provide a stern opening competitive test. They’ve recruited experience and physicality over the summer, but what can the Saints expect from their League Two opponents?

To get the inside view on Colchester, we caught up with Jonathan Waldron of the Colchester Gazette and Aaron Jay from the Beyond the Barside podcast, who explained how Danny Cowley’s men are likely to approach the contest.

High-Energy Approach

Speaking to Attacking Football, journalist Jonathan Waldron outlined what the South Coast outfit should anticipate ahead of this Saturday’s clash: “Southampton can expect a Colchester side who will look to play with energy, speed and tempo, particularly at home.”

Ten of their 18 league victories came at home last season as Colchester finished 12th in League Two – their second full campaign under Cowley. They placed 10th in his first full season, a noticeable improvement after three consecutive finishes below 15th before his arrival.

“Danny Cowley’s team like to play the game transitionally, with the U’s boss using the adage ‘think forward, play forward, run forward’ in determining his side’s style of play,” Waldron continued.

“Under the Cowleys, the U’s will look to be very good defensively at stopping transition and defending set pieces, while at the same time impress offensively with their counter-attacking and be ruthless with attacking transitions.”

That combination of defensive discipline alongside a transition-focused mentality is exactly what can make them awkward opponents at this stage of the season, where clubs like Southampton are re-developing fluency in their patterns of play.

Tonda Eckert’s side will look to dominate possession in the opposition’s half, allowing them to sustain pressure. Whereas Colchester will aim to capitalise on gaps in behind, and it’s the Saints’ responsibility to counter-press once they’ve lost possession.

Eckert has previously shown a willingness to adapt when momentum shifts. Last season, the Saints were winning comfortably 3-0 against Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup. After quickly conceding two goals, Eckert opted for a five-back system to successfully see the game out.

Pressing

As podcaster and fan Aaron Jay points out, the U’s are expected to use their energy and physicality to disrupt the Saints’ rhythm.

“Colchester will look to press high when the opportunity is there and make life difficult for Southampton. The work rate is something Cowley demands, so I’d expect them to be aggressive out of possession and try to force mistakes.”

Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 setup gives them several ways to play through a high press. Both holding midfielders provide passing outlets for the centre-backs, helping to bypass the first line before playing forward or recycling possession.

This is paired effectively with a physical number nine as their direct long-ball option – someone, often striker Cyle Larin, who will look to receive with his back to goal and bring others into play.

Biggest Threat?

“Colchester have deliberately added more size and physicality in the summer, so corners, free-kicks and long throws are likely to be a major part of their attacking threat,” Aaron added.

“Against a side with Southampton’s quality, they’ll know they need to maximise those moments, so don’t be surprised if a lot of emphasis is placed on dead-ball situations.”

Southampton struggled with set-pieces during pre-season, with chances and goals conceded as a result. Colchester rec orded 10 set-piece goals last season; it’s likely to be their best route for creating clear-cut opportunities.

Key Players to Watch

Beyond Colchester’s overall approach, there are several individuals Southampton will need to be aware of.

As Aaron Jay explains, “Jack Payne is still the player who makes Colchester tick creatively. If he’s given time and space, he has the quality to unlock defences and create chances.”

Last season the 31-year-old midfielder was their top scorer, netting 13 goals alongside notching six assists – the most at the club.

Aaron also highlighted two of Colchester’s summer recruits: “Among the new signings, Paul Digby and Sean Raggett are two to watch. They’ve been brought in to add leadership, experience and a much more physical edge, particularly defensively and at set pieces.

“Those additions reflect the type of team Danny Cowley wants to build, and they’ll be important players if Colchester are going to compete against higher-quality opposition like Southampton.”

If the Saints control transitions and defend set-pieces effectively, their superior quality should tell. If they don’t, Colchester could have enough physicality and organisation to turn the tie into an uncomfortable afternoon.
