Tom Cleverley shares his thoughts on the privilege of being Plymouth Argyle manager - The support and size of the club is "exciting"
After being appointed as Plymouth Argyle manager at the start of the season, Tom Cleverley has shared his surprise at the 'size' of the club and the privilege of being the Pilgrims' boss.
After a bitterly disappointing Championship campaign last season under Miron Muslic, as the Pilgrims faced relegation to League One with a 23rd place finish, Plymouth Argyle's new manager, Tom Cleverley has had a sub-par start to life in the dugout at Home Park after being tipped as heavy promotion candidates prior to a ball being kicked.
With the Pilgrims in search of an immediate return to the second tier, fans are in high spirits that Cleverley can be the man to guide their team back to the Championship despite plenty of changes, not only in the dugout but on the pitch as well.
Notable names such as Lorent Tolaj and Bradley Ibrahim coming in the door, as well as Maksym Taloverov and Nikola Katic departing, left Cleverley a lot of work to do in terms of getting a starting XI settled and ready for the challenge that League One has to offer.
Away from what happens on the pitch however, Cleverley has praised the Plymouth Argyle faithful for being their 12th-man so far in his tenure.
After making the move down South from Watford to the South Coast with Plymouth, Cleverley picked up on the committed support that the Pilgrims fans have through thick and thin.
When speaking to PlymouthLive, Cleverley said: "What I have learned about the football club is the size of it. To go to Burton, to go to Luton, to have those receptions when we arrive at 1:15pm, nearly two hours before kick-off. When we come here [Home Park] it's a full house."
He continued: "The size of the football club is exciting, and it's a real privilege to work for."
Cleverley appreciates the size of the football club he has walked into after seeing the continued support week-on-week for his size. If anything, the big capacity crowds and extended travelling support will for sure make the Plymouth boss want results on the pitch from his players in order to earn that respect from the fans at his new club.
When speaking to PlymouthLive about his time in the dugout at Home Park so far this season, Cleverley said: "What I have learned about myself is to keep believing in what we do... I have learned that I'm very processed and calm in a bit of a sticky situation."
"We have got a lot of quality, we are building confidence. Building consistency. If we do what we can control to the standard we know we can, we will be a tough nut to crack."
With Plymouth seeming to be on the up with points on the board after a slow start to the season, the support from the fans can go a long way in adding to Cleverley forming a tight-knit group.
This was highlighted in the Pilgrims' away win over Luton Town in mid-Septmeber where, despite being a man down, the determination to go on and snatch all three points over fellow promotion candidates seemed to be a turning point in their season, with the away fans translating their belief into the players by spurring their team on.
Cleverley will want to turn Home Park into a fortress going forward and could well be the difference in the Pilgrims getting themselves out of the tricky division that is League One.
