Jamie Vardy faces an uncertain future at Leicester City amid his expiring contract
Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker refused to rule out a deal to sign Jamie Vardy from Leicester City last summer.
And now, according to Sky Sports, the forward might be ready to depart the Foxes after 13 years with the club.
Vardy became an iconic striker during his time at the King Power Stadium, playing a pivotal role in Leicester achieving both the Premier League title and the FA Cup during his time there.
However, his contract is now set to expire at the end of the campaign, with the Leicestershire outfit heading straight back for the Championship just 12 months after gaining promotion to the top flight.
Ker claimed last year that there is no reason why Vardy couldn’t be a great player for Wrexham, with the club embarking on a return to League One at the time.
The executive suggested that his age wouldn’t be an issue to a deal, with the player now coming into the final stages of his career.
"There's nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn't be a great Wrexham player," said Ker, via Sportbible.
"It's not a name I've had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn't put us off."
With it now being reported that the 38-year-old is not planning on retiring, a move could come to fruition with the Red Dragons in the mix for promotion to the Championship.
It has been claimed that he is in constant dialogue with the club over his future, meaning the door is still open to Vardy staying with the Foxes beyond this campaign.
However, no decision has yet been made over the next step in his career, with his deal set to expire in June.
Given Phil Parkinson's side and Leicester could be competing in the same division next year, perhaps the forward will be in the opposition dressing room at the King Power stadium next season.
Wrexham have invested in the team heavily to get from the National League to the cusp of the Championship in such a short span of time.
Bringing in Vardy would be a real statement of their intent to keep spending if promotion to the Championship is secured.
This is a former England international and Premier League winner, who has seven top flight goals to his name this season.
The 38-year-old scored 18 times in the Championship last season to help Leicester to promotion, showing he is still more than capable of competing at this level.
It would be surprising if Vardy opted to leave Leicester given his strong connection to the club, but a project like Wrexham’s could be strong enough to tempt him away in the twilight of his playing days.
It would be an exciting move by the Welsh outfit, although there would be obvious concerns over investing so heavily in a player that will have a short shelf-life at the club as a player.
