Football League World explores the two loan spells that Norman Bassette has had this season
It's safe to say that Norman Bassette's time at Coventry City never got going after arriving as a hotly-rated teenager in 2024.
The Sky Blues paid a reported fee of between £2.1 million and £2.98 million to pry the then-19-year-old away from French side SM Caen, after he'd netted five in 23 games while on loan in Belgium with KV Mechelen.
Bassette had to navigate a managerial change pretty early into his career at the CBS Arena, with club legend Mark Robins being dismissed just three months after he brought him to the club.
And while the new manager, Frank Lampard, initially had the Belgian Under-21 international in his plans, starting seven of his first nine league games as the Coventry manager, he'd fail to make another after then, and would spend the majority of the club's run towards the play-offs as an unused substitute, or even out of the squad completely.
He didn't make the matchday squads in either of their play-off bouts with Sunderland, and from then on, the writing was seemingly on the wall.

After once again not being involved in first-team games in the first month of the campaign, Bassette secured a loan move away to Stade de Reims, where he'd return to the French second tier on an initial season-long loan.
There, he'd start the first six games of the campaign for the recently relegated top-flight side, netting his first goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Clermont Foot. Meanwhile, he was getting reps in with the Belgian Under-21 squad, where he scored three in four European Championship qualifying matches.
However, after being subbed off at half-time against Rodez AF in October, he would fail to start another league game in France. His final appearance before his loan move ended would see him score in the Coupe de France against fifth-tier side IC de Croix.
Indeed, he'd be relocated in January, moving to the German second tier to sign with FC Kaiserslautern on another loan move, although this had an option to buy at the end of it.
Bassette has enjoyed a much more regular run in the team over in Germany, starting seven of his 10 Bundesliga 2 games, scoring twice and adding a couple of assists alongside that, too.
'Die roten Teufel' have had a slight stumble in their quest for promotion to the Bundesliga, losing three of their last four, and falling to seventh as a result. In a division where the top two go up, and the third plays third-bottom in the Bundesliga in a promotion play-off, third place is the minimum for German second-tier sides who want to be promoted.
Kaiserslautern are 11 points behind Paderborn, who occupy third with seven games to go, so an almighty turnaround would be needed if Bassette was going to be playing in the German top flight next season.

Not only does Kaiserslautern have the option to buy Bassette at the end of the campaign, but even if they opted not to pursue it, you can imagine that the 21-year-old will be on his way out of the CBS Arena permanently this coming summer.
The Belgian frontman hasn't played for Coventry since last April, and hasn't started a game for the Sky Blues since last January. Since then, Frank Lampard's side has transformed from one with play-off hopes to one with one foot in the Premier League.
If Bassette wasn't in Lampard's plans before, he definitely won't be if the Sky Blues are playing top-flight football next season.
That's not to say that the 21-year-old doesn't still have plenty of potential to grow, and we could look back at his career path in five years and believe that Coventry fumbled a top striker. But for now, the two trajectories of both the club and player aren't crossing, and they will likely agree to part ways in the coming months.
