When Mykhailo Mudryk Is Set To Return After Major Spurs Loan Injury Setback | OneFootball

Mykhailo Mudryk was one of many deadline day departures from Chelsea.

On-loan Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk sustained an injury in Tottenham Hotspur training that may keep him out for a couple of months.

Mudryk joined Tottenham on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day earlier this month in a deal that includes a £75 million permanent move option.

The 25-year-old was cleared to resume his playing career earlier this month after an agreement with the FA and WADA resolved his doping case in late July.

He had already served 20 months of his four-year provisional suspension at that point, which led to Chelsea’s decision to let him leave on loan in pursuit of regular minutes to regain his touch after his inactivity.

There was just not enough room for another left winger at Chelsea, and Jamie Gittens’ struggles for minutes this season have proved this.

Spurs happened to be a suitable destination. Despite the rivalry between Chelsea and Spurs, a move to north London has reunited him with Roberto De Zerbi, whom he already worked with at Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

The winger has only played 16 minutes for Spurs since the loan switch, making his debut for the club as a late substitute in a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Unfortunately for Mudryk, the second-half cameo against Forest will remain his only appearance for Spurs for a while after he sustained an ankle injury in training. The injury is expected to keep him out for six to eight weeks.

This means he will at least miss Spurs’ next three games before the September international break, against Everton and Aston Villa in the league and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

It remains unclear whether Mudryk will make his return before Spurs visit Stamford Bridge in late October, but he is ineligible for the derby due to his loan status regardless. Spurs will face Manchester United and Coventry City in early October, before making the trip to west London.

While the Ukraine international’s injury absence does not directly affect Chelsea’s season, it may still reduce the chances for Spurs to trigger the buy-option clause in his loan deal.

Obviously, this is also bad news for Mudryk personally, given that he desperately needs to play.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk on a deal worth an initial £62m back in 2023 and remains under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2031.

Ideally, Chelsea would want Mudryk to return to the level he was at prior to his provisional suspension. This would provide Chelsea with more options next summer, even if Spurs decide not to sign him permanently.
