When was the last time a team overcame a two-goal deficit in the League Cup semi-finals?

It's safe to say that Newcastle United have it all to do at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City tonight.

It was 1-0 in the first leg at St James' Park thanks to Antoine Semenyo's 53rd-minute goal. However, substitute Rayan Cherki struck late in the final seconds of the game to make the Magpies' task even more daunting.

Some bookies are giving odds of 14/1 for Newcastle to qualify but it will require some much improved form considering that Eddie Howe's side have only won one of their last seven games in all competitions (with the penalty shoot-out win over Bournemouth classing as a draw).

Meanwhile City have won all 11 of their last home games against Newcastle with tonight's visitors only ever winning once against the Citizens at the Etihad: a 2-0 win for Alan Pardew's side thanks to goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko in 2014.

Funnily enough, that win was in this very same competition albeit at the fourth round stage.

But if last weekend has shown anything it's that City can sometimes concede two goals out of seemingly nowhere. Pep Guardiola's side looked like they were playing a pre-season friendly in the first half before letting a 2-0 lead slip to struggling Spurs. Surely scoring two over 90 minutes is an easier prospect...

When was the last time a team were two goals down in the League Cup semi-final first leg before going on to reach the final?

We'll have to go all the way back to February 1994 for that. Aston Villa surprisingly found themselves 3-1 down away to Tranmere Rovers in the first leg before going on to win 3-1 at Villa Park in the next game and eventually triumphing on penalties.

That year Villa went on to win the final against Manchester United which stopped Sir Alex Ferguson's side from lifting a domestic treble – a league and FA Cup double had to suffice instead.

Could we see a similar theme this time round with Newcastle playing the Villa and Arsenal the Man Utd? Perhaps, but we'd need Man City to channel their inner Tranmere Rovers for that to happen.
