The Foxes are looking to start their rebuild with a new man in the hotseat

Leicester City's recent plight has been well-documented, as some 10 years after the club achieved the ultimate prize of winning the Premier League, they are preparing for life in League One for just the second time since forming in 1884.

The Foxes, despite their concerning financial situation, were tipped to feature among the Championship's promotion contenders this season after an immediate relegation from the top-flight in 2024/25.

Yet, after an encouraging start under Marti Cifuentes, which included just one defeat in the first 10 league matches of the season, the East Midlands side saw their form take a concerning dip, eventually resulting in the Spaniard being relieved of his duties on January 25th, just a matter of months into his three-year contract.

Former Foxes defender and experienced Championship boss, Gary Rowett, was then handed the reins on a contract until the end of the season, but it is expected that the 52-year-old will depart imminently, allowing the club to search for their latest man in the hotseat ahead of a crucial rebuilding period.

It has been claimed that an announcement on this front could come in July, one month until the 2026/27 campaign begins, and Alan Nixon has since reported that one man on the shortlist is 54-year-old Dutchman, Dick Schreuder.

Despite being well-known and respected in the Netherlands, it's fair to say that the former midfielder isn't the most household of names in the circle of the EFL, and Football League World have now profiled the man who could be in charge at the King Power Stadium next term.

Indeed, Nixon's aforementioned report claims that the under-fire Foxes hierarchy are wanting to hold talks with Schreuder over the possibility of leading their first season at League One level since 2009, where they secured an immediate title success under Nigel Pearson.

Schreuder was born in Barneveld in August 1971, and enjoyed a respectable playing career which also took him to Stoke City in the 1997/98 season, although he would make just two appearances for the club in the EFL Cup before returning to the Netherlands.

After starting his coaching and managerial career with hometown club, SDV Barneveld, he would move back to English soil as part of Edgar Davids' management team at Barnet, before taking up the role of joint-manager for a brief period alongside Ulrich Landvreugd ahead of Martin Allen's return to the League Two outfit.

After spending a handful of seasons on the coaching staff of TSG Hoffenheim, Philadelphia Union and Vitesse Arnhem following a period as VV Katwijk boss, Schreuder's success in the dugout began at PEC Zwolle between November 2021 and June 2023, achieving promotion back to the Eredivisie in his only full season at the club.

He would enjoy similar fortunes in his only full season at Spanish outfit, CD Castellon, as they were promoted back to the Segunda División in 2023/24, before Schreuder was dismissed last January.

Schreuder has since, unexpectedly, turned NEC Nimejen into European contenders in the Eredivisie after being appointed at the Goffertstadion in July 2025, as they sit third in the table, currently sandwiched between Feyenoord and Ajax.

Dick Schreuder's CV would certainly encourage Leicester City's disillusioned fanbase

At present, the atmosphere at the King Power is one of toxicity, rather than unity, meaning whoever comes in as the Foxes' latest manager will be under immediate pressure to turn such feelings around.

Alongside Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester will be a major scalp for many League One clubs next term, which only adds to the weight of expectation, but Schreuder's CV is certainly one which offers encouragement.

The Dutchman boasts a win percentage of over 50 percent at each of the clubs he has worked at in a managerial capacity, which would need to continue if City were to mount a serious promotion bid.

Of course, several high-profile names are expected to depart the club in pre-season due to a hefty wage bill, and that will only add to the difficulty, but it could be seen as highly rewarding if the next Leicester boss was able to assemble a new-look squad and transform their fortunes.

However, it also remains to be seen whether Schreuder can be tempted to the Midlands regardless of Leicester's stature in the modern game, with his current employers very much looking at hosting some form of European competition next season.
