Southampton reportedly hold an interest in Manchester United full-back Jaydan Kamason, with a permanent move being considered.

According to Simon Jones of the Daily Mail, Southampton’s interest differs from that of other clubs, who are exploring the possibility of taking Kamason on loan. United, meanwhile, are expected to keep the defender around the first-team squad until at least January, leaving his immediate future uncertain.

So, what makes Kamason an attractive option for Southampton?

Jaydan Kamason rose through Manchester United’s youth ranks. He became the first player to sign a scholarship after joining from the Academy’s Emerging Talent Programme.

Playing for the under-21s last season, he endured a difficult campaign with two injuries limiting his time on the pitch. He featured for just over 1,100 minutes across his 14 appearances in Premier League 2.

“Last season, unfortunately, I had two injuries. Hopefully this season will be more positive. I’m just trying to stay fit now and show my ability on the pitch,” Kamason told the BBC.

“If I need a few loans or whatever, we’ll have to see, but I’m trying to get to that top level – and that’s Manchester United. You have to be ambitious.”

He’s been involved with the senior squad during pre-season under head coach Michael Carrick, accumulating two 45-minute outings against Wrexham and Rosenborg. He impressed in the latter, contributing two assists in a 5-0 victory.

Kamason’s long-term future at Manchester United is also relatively secure, having signed a new contract in April of this year that runs until 2028, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further year.

The 19-year-old is an agile, pacy defender who likes to attack the byline before playing a dangerous ball into the box. He’s a powerful runner, capable of playing in tight spaces, while his attacking qualities allow him to provide both a creative and goalscoring threat from the right.

His athleticism is particularly useful when he has space to run into. Kamason uses large strides and extended touches to accelerate past opponents. That directness gives him an effective way of beating his man.

In Tonda Eckert’s 4-2-3-1, the full-backs regularly advance into the attacking third and provide width. The right-back often supports the winger by making overlapping runs towards the byline. That could suit Kamason, with his ability to deliver from advanced positions potentially giving Southampton another option in the final third.

To understand Kamason’s current position at Manchester United, Shivam Varu, a Manchester United fan and tactical writer, offered his assessment of the 19-year-old’s development.

“He’s a solid defender who plays right-back. I think if he went to Southampton, he might go into the under-21s initially but could eventually reach the first team. He’s at that stage where he’s in between youth team and first team minutes.”

Standing at 5’9″, Kamason is also comfortable during one-on-one situations in the defensive third, winning 70% of his tackles and 71% of his aerial duels last season (according to Manchester United’s website).

Competition at Southampton

There is the question, however, of Kamason’s desire for regular senior football. The Saints already have established Championship-level options at right-back in Mads Roerslev and James Bree, making a breakthrough into the squad difficult.

Roerslev arrived from Brentford last summer on a four-year deal. Bree, meanwhile, is firmly in Tonda Eckert’s plans after signing a three-year deal at the start of the summer.

As a result, Southampton’s interest could depend on how they view Kamason’s pathway into the first team. Manchester United are likely to favour a move where the 19-year-old can play regularly, gain consistent senior minutes with the possibility of a return, ensuring he remains on track for his development.

For Southampton, Kamason represents an intriguing opportunity to add a young, attack-minded full-back with plenty of room for development.

There is also the possibility that Southampton’s interest in Kamason is one to watch further down the line rather than one that will develop into an immediate move.

With Roerslev and Bree already providing established options at right-back, the Saints likely won’t view the position as a priority, especially with their need for a striker. However, if Kamason becomes available in the future, Southampton could revisit their interest, particularly if they believe he has developed to the point where he can compete for regular first-team football.
