According to Le Progres, Argentina’s federation renewed its backing for Gianni Infantino on Thursday evening despite the turmoil at Fifa and criticism from Conmebol. The AFA has pointed to his record since 2016.

The Italo-Swiss president has been under pressure since the collapse of his proposal to open Fifa to private investors.

Earlier on Thursday, UEFA kept up the pressure and Conmebol voiced concern about Fifa’s methods.

On Friday, Norway’s federation, a long-standing critic, moved to request his resignation.

The stance is rooted in Infantino’s closeness to Claudio Tapia, the AFA president. Tapia has highlighted a decade in office, from 2016, which he views as a profound overhaul and a driver of the game’s growth worldwide.

Argentina accepts missteps around the abandoned project but, where others seek extra guarantees, considers Wednesday’s apology and the withdrawal sufficient.

With seven months until the March 2027 presidential election, Infantino, the only declared candidate, can already count on backing from one of world football’s most influential federations.
