Emiliano Martinez was the latest transfer between Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Unai Emery has revealed why Aston Villa and Chelsea want to 'kill each other' after their transfer dealings this summer.

Chelsea and Aston Villa have been involved in four first-team transfers this summer, with two players heading in each direction.

Morgan Rogers left Aston Villa for Chelsea for a club-record £117 million, while Emiliano Martinez completed a £7.5m switch to Stamford Bridge, which was confirmed on Sunday as the Blues finalised their new number one.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have signed Alejandro Garnacho on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy should certain conditions be met.

Nicolas Jackson was also surplus to Chelsea's attacking requirements this season under Xabi Alonso, and a £65m deal was agreed for the Senegalese international to reunite with Emery, with whom he spent time at Villarreal before joining Chelsea in 2023.

It has followed deals between the clubs in previous seasons, including Carney Chukwuemeka, Ian Maatsen, and Omari Kellyman, as well as a loan for Axel Disasi.

Chelsea and Aston Villa have helped each other comply with FFP regulations in recent seasons through transfers, even though both clubs have received UEFA penalties for breaching the squad-cost rule.

With four transfers completed between the clubs this summer, Emery was asked whether the clubs have a good relationship. He was quick to shut it down and explained why they both want to kill each other.

“Good relations? The relationship is only through the deals for money and the players," Emery said.

“They want to kill us - and we want to kill them! It is not a good relationship.

“We do deals because of course we have good players and we can sign players from them.

“But it is not a good relationship. It is a deal for money and players and they will want to kill us.

“They are signing Morgan and Emiliano Martinez to kill us.

“Of course, I am happy for the players. I am happy for Martinez and I am happy for Morgan Rogers. But I am not happy for Chelsea!”

Who has got the better deals this summer - Villa or Chelsea?

Both clubs will see that they've won in their own ways. Villa have brought in two players to fill required positions, whilst cashing in and receiving over £120m for both Rogers and Martinez.

Chelsea will see it as a strengthening of the goalkeeper position, an area that has faced heavy scrutiny ever since the current ownership bought the club. After Robert Sanchez's errors against Fulham, the Blues swiftly wrapped up a deal for Martinez.

Rogers was an Alonso signing, offering Chelsea balance and physicality for their style of play under the Spaniard, and bringing in an England international to play alongside his best friend off the pitch, Cole Palmer.

Jackson's move to Villa offers Emery familiarity and a replacement for Ollie Watkins, who left for Saudi Arabia. Villa have wanted Garnacho beyond this summer, so Emery will be hoping he can be the man who can rediscover the Argentine's best form.

Final verdicts can wait for the end of the season, but Rogers and Martinez have already proven after their debuts that they look to be shrewd buys for the Blues.

The clubs are due to meet for the first time this season in December, towards Christmas, at Stamford Bridge.
