Why Gus Hamer could still leave Sheffield United this month

Sheffield United's Gus Hamer has been on the radar of Trabzonspor previously, with the Turkish transfer deadline open until Friday.
Sheffield United had a very busy winter window as Chris Wilder looks to reshape the squad during his third spell in charge at Bramall Lane.
With Joe Rothwell and Kalvin Phillips among the late arrivals, the Blades had a very productive window, and another positive was that they managed to keep their key men.
Most would agree that Gus Hamer falls into that category, even if the Dutchman hasn’t managed to rediscover the outstanding form of the previous campaign that saw him named as the best player in the league.

So, it would have been a relief to all connected to the Blades that Hamer remained at Bramall Lane beyond the English deadline, which was at 7pm on Monday.
However, that doesn’t mean the 28-year-old won’t move on, as previous reports have claimed that Trabzonspor are monitoring Hamer, with journalist Ben Jacobs stating he could be allowed to leave for just £6m.
That’s because the Turkish deadline is open until Friday, February 6, so Trabzonspor still have time to close a deal if they are determined to sign the attacking midfielder.
They aren’t the only league in Europe to have their transfer window open, with Greece and Serbia still open as well, so Hamer could, in theory, join a club in either country, although there have been no links on that front.
This will be a worry for Sheffield United, as Hamer is a quality operator, as he proved against Oxford United in the week, as his superb pass for Chiedozie Ogbene made it four assists in three games for the creative midfielder.
So, there are signs that he is getting back to his best, and, if he does, he will be a huge asset to the Blades over the next few months.

Even though Sheffield United are eight points away from the play-offs, Wilder will believe they can close that gap, although it’s obviously going to be a huge ask.
But, even if it’s a small chance, the Blades will give it a go, so losing Hamer at a time when he can’t be replaced would make no sense.
Of course, if a ridiculous offer is tabled, then it does change things, but the money mentioned shouldn’t tempt the Blades.
With Hamer’s contract expiring in the summer of 2027, there is a strong possibility that he will leave in the summer, but that would be more understandable than sanctioning a sale to a Turkish club by Friday night.
