Leeds United have mutually agreed to end Max Wober’s contract a year early, drawing a permanent line under the defender’s short Elland Road spell.

The Athletic reports that the 28-year-old is in Germany for medical tests ahead of a free move to Schalke.

Wober arrived from RB Salzburg in January 2023 for £10million on a four-and-a-half-year deal to 2027, but made only 28 appearances before spending two seasons out on loan. He featured 25 times for Borussia Monchengladbach, then suffered a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season, playing just three games as the club declined a permanent option.

He had spoken of returning for pre-season, yet was left out of the USA tour squad. A full departure has felt inevitable since.

It is understood his 2023 transfer contained a sell-on clause that would give Salzburg a share of any future fee. Coupled with last season’s injury, any sale was likely to yield little. Ending the deal also removes a Premier League wage from Leeds’ books.

Wober will also be remembered as one of several players who activated relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach after Leeds dropped into the Championship in 2023. Schalke have just returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier and are among Germany’s historic clubs, with domestic and European honours including the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.
