Why Maurizio Sarri Won’t Resign From Lazio Role for a Second Time

While his original stint in the Italian capital ended with his resignation, Maurizio Sarri isn’t willing to resort to this option again.

The Background

The 66-year-old found success during his first tenure at the club, especially in the 2022/23 campaign, when the team finished second in the Serie A table. However, the following campaign was rather troublesome, so the manager decided to vacate his office in March 2024. At that stage, Sarri was burdened by the recurring issues in the locker room, as well as family reasons.

Maurizio Sarri Refuses to Resign From Lazio Job

At the time, the former Napoli and Chelsea manager decided to leave, while waiving the remaining salary in his contract, a gesture that was appreciated by Claudio Lotito at the time. But despite being far from pleased with the current situation at the club, Sarri has no desire to replicate this decision, as confirmed by Il Messaggero and Il Corriere dello Sport.

The Two Parties Are Tied Until 2028

Sarri had initially signed a two-year deal upon his return to the club last summer, with an option for a third season. However, it has been recently revealed that the original deal was swiftly replaced by a three-year contract in July. The hierarchy made this gesture as a sort of consolation when it was revealed that COVISOC had imposed a transfer ban on the club.

Three Things We Learned From Inter Milan vs Lazio: Sack Me if You Dare!

Therefore, the sources insist that the Tuscan tactician won’t contemplate resignation, either now or at the end of the season. After all, Sarri has no intention of giving Lotito and Co. any favors, especially after placing him in this undesirable situation, with a squad he considers anything but competitive.

Sarri Would Only Leave If Lazio Sack Him

Hence, if the club officials wish to get rid of Sarri, they will have to sack him. But in this case, his yearly net salary of €2.5-million would remain on the wage bil until June 2028, unless he decides to terminate the contract and sign for another club.
