As soon as it became clear that Juventus needed to sign a goalkeeper, several free agents were offered to the club, leaving them to decide which player would be the best option for their squad.

They have reportedly chosen Neto, whose move will see him return to the club he played for between 2015 and 2017. That means he already has experience of the environment and understands what it is like to play for the Bianconeri.

Juve sees him as an ideal player to add to their squad and believes he would be a suitable deputy for their current first-choice goalkeeper. However, the question remains as to why they chose him from the several other goalkeepers who were available.

Neto’s previous Juventus experience

Niccolò Ceccarini explained the thinking behind the decision, highlighting Neto’s previous experience with the club and his familiarity with the situation.

Ceccarini said via Tuttojuve:

“The names in play are Sergio Rico and Neto. However, in my opinion, in the end the fact that Neto already knows the environment, he already knows the whole situation, prevailed and therefore they are offering him a one-year contract.”

That previous experience appears to have been an important factor in Juventus’ decision. Rather than bringing in a goalkeeper who would need to become familiar with the club and its surroundings, they have opted for someone who already understands the environment.

Experienced goalkeeper faces challenge

Neto is an experienced goalkeeper, but he will need time to regain his sharpness after being without a club for weeks. He will have to work hard to get back up to speed before being ready to play at the required level.

At the same time, Juventus cannot afford to rush his return to competitive action. A careful approach could be important as he builds up his fitness and prepares for the demands of returning to football.

For Juve, Neto provides experience and familiarity at a time when they need an additional goalkeeper. His previous spell at the club could also help him settle quickly as he begins another chapter in Turin.
