Paris Saint-Germain face Flamengo tonight in the Intercontinental Cup, becoming the first French club to take part in the competition.

According to GetFootballNewsFrance.com, European entry is earned by winning the UEFA Champions League. Olympique de Marseille did so in 1993, defeating AC Milan in Munich thanks to a Basile Boli goal.

That triumph was overshadowed by the VA-OM affair, a corruption scandal in which Marseille sought to bribe Valenciennes players to underperform in a league match.

The fallout stained their domestic and European success that season, and saw Marseille excluded from the Intercontinental Cup later that autumn.

Those circumstances explain PSG's presence in this fixture against Flamengo tonight.
