Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has explained the reason why he opted to drop goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper had an impressive end to the 2024/25 campaign, getting the nod to start in goal ahead of Badra Ali Sangare and Lloyd Kazapua, who were both released by the club.
Leaner’s exploits caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who named the player in his squad for the June international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique.
Furthermore, he attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs, but a move never materialized and the goalminder looks set to remain at Babina Noko with the window set to slam shut on 22 September.
Leaner has made seven appearances across all competitions this season, keeping three clean sheets but was abruptly dropped – a decision the Sekhukhune mentor clarified.
“I think ultimately, Toaster [Nsabata] is Zambia’s first choice goalkeeper. It was someone that we signed at the beginning of the season, but we struggled to get his work permit and for that reason Toaster didn’t start and Renaldo started,” said Tinkler.
“[Manuel] Sapunga was someone else who joined us at the beginning of the season from Polokwane City. But he spent a long time without playing and Renaldo obviously ended last season very well.
“But in reality, my first choice would have always been Toaster. Now he has got his work permit, so he comes into the team.
Meanwhile, the Limpopo club will square off against Golden Arrows at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday as they look to maintain their position at the summit of the table.
