Why Sheffield Wednesday, Henrik Pedersen owe Man Utd double transfer thank-you right now

Sheffield Wednesday have a lot to be thankful to Manchester United for as Harry Amass and Charlie McNeill continue to shine at Hillsborough.

Dejphon Chansiri may now have departed Sheffield Wednesday, but the legacy of his mismanagement continues to be painfully clear for the Owls on the pitch.

Chansiri's turbulent decade-long tenure at Wednesday came to an end last month when he put the club and the company through which he owned the stadium into administration, and with a number of bids on the table from credible parties, an exciting new era will soon be underway at Hillsborough.

However, the financial crisis under Chansiri in the summer saw a host of the Owls' key players depart, which has left them with a threadbare squad, and the 12-point deduction they received for entering administration has all but ended any slim hopes of survival.

Despite some promising moments, it was another frustrating afternoon for Wednesday as they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat as they were beaten 3-2 at home by Preston North End on Saturday, and Henrik Pedersen's men are now without a win in their last 12 games.

Amid all the off-field turmoil, there has been little to give the long-suffering Owls supporters any encouragement on the pitch of late, but their predicament could potentially have been even worse if not for two transfer decisions by Manchester United.

Sheffield Wednesday will be grateful to Manchester United for generous Harry Amass move

As their transfer restrictions piled up as a result of Chansiri's misdemeanours, Wednesday were prevented from doing virtually any business in the summer window.

The Owls were given permission from the EFL to make their first summer signing in late August when goalkeeper Ethan Horvath arrived on an emergency loan from Cardiff City following a long-term injury to Pierce Charles, and Harry Amass became their only other addition when he made a temporary move from Man United on the final day of the window.

The deal for Amass only got over the line after the Red Devils agreed to pay the entirety of Amass' wages during his time at Hillsborough, and in a further generous move to help out cash-strapped Wednesday, they are even footing the bill for his accomodation costs.

Amass has previously made seven senior appearances for United, while he is also an England Under-19 international, so he arrived in South Yorkshire with a big reputation, and he has shown exactly why he is so highly-rated during an impressive spell with the Owls.

It has not been easy for Amass to come into the weakest team in the league by quite some distance, but he has still managed to show his defensive qualities, and he has also been a threat going forward, scoring one goal and providing one assist in 14 appearances so far.

While the move has certainly benefitted Wednesday, Amass has also gained plenty of valuable experience during his time at the club, and having started every game since his arrival, the Red Devils will no doubt be delighted to see him getting such regular game time in the Championship.

With Amass' loan deal set to expire in January, United will have a big decision to make on whether to allow the 18-year-old to see out the season at Hillsborough, but the Owls will certainly be hoping that the Premier League giants will help them out once again.

Henrik Pedersen and Sheffield Wednesday have another big reason to be thankful to Manchester United

Wednesday will have plenty of gratitude to United for their goodwill gesture in getting the deal for Amass done, but they may also be feeling thankful to the Red Devils for their decision to release forward Charlie McNeill last summer.

After making just one senior appearance for the club, McNeill departed Old Trafford last summer to make the move to Hillsborough, with Wednesday fighting off competition from Lazio, Torino, LA Galaxy and Toronto to land his signature.

McNeill scored twice on his debut for the Owls last season in an EFL Cup victory at Hull City, but he made just six further appearances in what proved to be a frustrating campaign for the 22-year-old.

In normal circumstances, there may have been doubts over McNeill's future at the club in the summer given his lack of game time, but the mass exodus has opened the door for him this season, and he is certainly starting to take his chance.

While he has not always been a regular starter, McNeill has shown plenty of glimpses of his ability this season, and after crashing a shot against the bar in the defeat at Millwall in midweek, he got his first two goals of the campaign against Preston on Saturday, with the first of those being assisted by Amass.

McNeill missed the opportunity to complete his hat-trick when he had a second half penalty saved by Daniel Iversen, and just minutes later, North End went up the other end to score their winner through Mads Frokjaer-Jensen, but some inconsistency is to be expected from a player who is still in the early stages of his career.
