Wigan Athletic have made an inconsistent start to the League One campaign as Ryan Lowe's side sit just three points above the relegation zone.

It's been far from the ideal start for Lowe's Wigan side as there has been little correlation between the Latics' pattern of results with 15 games of the season played.

Wigan are sat on 18 points with a third of the season down, and work needs to be done in Greater Manchester otherwise they could find themselves battling it out to stay in League One.

The third tier is unforgiving at the best of times, with four relegation spots making it a difficult league to get promoted from but also fiercely contested at the other end of the table.

In recent years, Wigan have found themselves cementing a mid-table finish with very few dramas, but with Lowe's side lacking the ambition to mount a charge for the play-off spots, question marks have been raised about whether it's time for club owner, Mike Danson, to consider parting company with the man in the dugout - the result of their away fixture to AFC Wimbledon could heighten their relegation worries.

It's been an up and down season for the Latics so far, but as we enter the busy festive period, any movement to personnel when it comes to coaching staff would be seen as a bold and brave decision if Danson were to take action, as his Wigan side are performing below expectations.

Football League World's Wigan Athletic fan pundit, Corey Bissell, believes that Lowe's Wigan tenure is far from over, but stressed the importance of being given both "time and investment".

When asked whether Danson should consider finding a replacement for Lowe, Corey didn't hesitate to say: "I don't think so, no. Ryan Lowe is a manager that is proven works in this league."

Corey continued: "I think time and a bit more investment is what needs to be given to him, not a P45 to be honest with you.

"I think personally the argument that he should be doing better with the squad that he's got is up in the air really. Some of these players are unproven. The likes of Ryan Trevitt is unproven, and he's injured, although I was really liking him before he got injured, to be fair. People like Callum Wright are not so proven. Christian Saydee has been around in League One for a while at times, but in terms of goalscoring, he's unproven. Dara Costelloe not too dissimilar. Paul Mullin in League One, is he proven? Not really.

"We're getting really good performances out of certain individuals like Fraser Murray. I think Ryan Lowe just needs to be given more time, a bit more investment in the squad and I wouldn't let him go, no."

Ryan Lowe's time with Wigan Athletic has not replicated his days with Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End

The 47-year-old manager took charge of the Greater Manchester outfit in March earlier this year and has had a difficult first nine months in charge as he is averaging a win percentage of 27% and 1.2 points per game.

In comparison to his time with Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End, he enjoyed better stints with his previous two clubs. Especially with the Pilgrims as he won promotion to League One with them in the 2019/20 season.

Lowe certainly made a name for himself half a decade ago as he also had a terrific spell with Bury. He led his former club to League One back in 2019 prior to their financial troubles, making it back-to-back promotions with two different clubs.

While mid-table stability isn't going to get the Wigan fans off their seats, what Lowe does provide is the know-how to build a solid foundation and progress from that.
