Wilder confirms Sheffield United transfer progress ahead of Hamer departure | OneFootball

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder says the club must move on from Gus Hamer’s departure to Coventry City and has revealed he wants to bring in at least two more players before the transfer window closes.

Hamer is set to complete his return to his former club Coventry this week.

And Wilder admitted the midfielder will be a significant loss but insists the club must now focus on finding a suitable replacement.

“I do, 100 percent,” Wilder replied when asked if he expects Hamer to depart. “That’s Gus. So, we have to move on. Everybody, me, supporters, players.

“You know, he was a special player for us and he’s a big player. We all understand that, but it’s a decision.

“Steve [Bettis, chief executive] and the owners know that we have to replace Gus with a really top player.

“I personally think that we’re in a good place. We’re maybe two or three players off being in a better place. So, I’ll always push to do that.”

Wilder confirmed the Blades have already made a bid for a player as they look to strengthen their squad.

“We put a bid in for a player. So, that’s positive,” he said.

However, the Sheffield United boss acknowledged the club’s financial situation has changed following the end of their parachute payments.

“We have to cut our cloth accordingly, and we have to be smart,” Wilder explained.

“It’s a difficult one because we’ve missed out on some decent free transfers. So, that’s disappointing. But we have to move on and that’s part and parcel of the job.”

Wilder is also prepared to be patient when it comes to loan targets.

“If we want good loans, we’re going to have to be really patient,” he said.

“And when they know that they can’t go out on permanent deals, then the loans become available.

“We want two players that hopefully can start in the team to take us to the position we are in,” he said.

“I’m happy with the group, but I’m always trying to improve it. I think we’re two or three players off being really, really competitive.”

“I think we will be competitive in what I’ve seen so far this season.

“But to take that next step, then hopefully we can do the business that we do. But we have to be patient with it.”
